The system will ask you to enter a series of details for the new user. Simply accept the default options, and make sure you supply no password when prompted. You should see a message Account setup complete when the account has been created. Enter a code, or tap Cancel to quit without entering a code. After you enter the code, the iPod prompts you to reenter it, and then displays the Passcode Lock settings screen, shown in Figure 2-4. To test your passcode, click the Sleep/Wake button once (to put your iPod to sleep) and again (to wake it up). The passcode challenge screen greets you, as shown in Figure 2-5. Enter your passcode, and your iPod unlocks.

With all that done, you are now ready to start the CouchDB server. The following command will start the CouchDB server in the background: $ su -c '/etc/init.d/couchdb start' You should see a message Starting database server couchdb to confirm that the server is indeed starting. Let s perform a quick check to see that it is indeed working: $ curl http://127.0.0.1:5984 If the CouchDB server is running, you should see a message like this: {"couchdb":"Welcome","version":"0.10.0a809125"} If, for some reason, the server is not running and you get an error message when you try the previous line, it may be an issue with the initialization script. Try simply entering the following command: $ couchdb If the build was successful, you should see a message saying Apache CouchDB has started Time to relax. Open up a second Terminal window, and try the curl command shown previously again this time it should work. Before you move on, now would be a good time to test that Futon, CouchDB s administration utility, is working correctly. Futon provides a suite of diagnostic tests that will ensure that your CouchDB installation is healthy. Open your favorite web browser, and go to http://127.0.0.1:5984/_utils. You should see a screen like Figure 2-11.

Don t call the Sleep method in production code. You use it here only for demonstration purposes so you can see that the UpdateProgress control is working.

Caution You need to be careful of a couple of things when entering JSON data through curl. The first is that although the JSON code may run over several lines, it s important that you do not cause line breaks by pressing Enter or Return yourself. Just let the commands wrap onto the next line themselves. Second, JSON data must be escaped when passed as data in curl. As you can see in the previous example, I am escaping every double quote character by inserting a backslash in front of it. If you do not do this, you can expect an invalid_json error to be returned by the CouchDB server.

To remove the passcode from your iPod, go back to the Passcode Lock settings screen (Figure 2-4). Choose Turn Passcode Off, and reenter the passcode one more time to confirm that it s really you making this request. So what happens when you lose your passcode, or a mean-spirited colleague adds one to your iPod without telling you You ll need to connect the iPod to your home computer and use iTunes to restore the iPod software. You can restore your iPod by selecting the Summary tab in iTunes and clicking Restore. For more information about restoring your iPod and putting it into recovery mode (which forces iTunes to restore it), see the iPod Recovery Mode and Restoration section later in this chapter.
